Muscle, skin & physical aging

Debbie sees muscle loss (sarcopenia) as the visible marker of crossing into old age, linked to cognitive decline, pneumonia risk, and mortality. It can be reversed even in aging, but single interventions produce modest results, so she favors stacking exercise, nutrition, and anti-inflammatory approaches. More recently she has explored the idea that motor neuron loss starts sarcopenia and may set a hard limit on lifespan. For skin, she focuses on changes that decline or build up with age, such as falling taurine, AGE-crosslinked collagen, and age spots, and she runs her own careful experiments.

How it connects

Motor neuron loss may be what starts sarcopenia, and it is the combination of slow gait, weak grip, and low muscle mass, not low muscle mass alone, that predicts mortality.

Are Motor Neurons the Cause of the Hard Limit on Lifespan?

In animal studies, aged muscle produced inflammation but too few pro-resolving mediators, and resolvin D1 injections partly reversed it.

Stopping Inflammaging: SPMs to the Rescue

EDA2R rises body-wide with age and drives NF-kB inflammation and muscle wasting, and she ties it back to the autodigestion theory.

Researchers Untangle an Important Hallmark of Aging: EDA2R

In a trial of pre-frail or sarcopenic people, combining nutrition, cognitive training, and exercise reversed sarcopenia, while each intervention alone did not.

Preventing Muscle Loss in Aging

AGEs such as CML crosslink collagen, stiffening skin, blood vessels, and eye lenses, and a new enzyme was able to remove CML.

From Irreversible to Repairable: Reversing Protein Glycation in Aging

Skin taurine declines with age, and animal studies suggest oral or topical taurine supports skin barrier, collagen, and moisture.
